Powering Communities with Purpose
We’re thrilled to share the news of our latest anaerobic digester installation at Food Lifeline, a major Seattle-area food bank that serves as a critical resource for the community. Food Lifeline partners with over 400 retailers—including Walmart, Safeway, QFC, and Fred Meyer—to rescue food and redistribute it where it’s needed most. Every day, they help provide more than 160,000 meals to people across Western Washington.

A Sustainable Partnership for a Resilient Future
This initiative is the result of a powerful collaboration between Food Lifeline, Chomp Energy, and community-focused organizations including the Duwamish Valley Sustainability Association, Black Star Farmers, and Sustainable Seattle.
Together, we’re tackling the challenge of food waste by transforming it into a valuable resource. Chomp’s anaerobic digester will process food that cannot be redistributed, converting it into renewable electricity that Food Lifeline will use to power its operations.
Why Chomp?
Food Lifeline selected Chomp not just because we’re a local partner—but because our technology is uniquely designed to fit seamlessly into existing operations. Our digesters are compact, cost-effective, and easy to install—making them an ideal solution for food banks and community food hubs with limited space or budget.
This marks Chomp’s third installation at a food bank, with more in development across the U.S.

What is Anaerobic Digestion?
Anaerobic digestion (AD) is a natural process where microorganisms break down organic materials in an oxygen-free environment. This results in:
- Biogas: A renewable energy source that can generate electricity and heat.
- Biofertilizer: A nutrient-rich liquid that supports healthy soil and plant growth.
- Reduced Methane Emissions: Lowering the climate impact of food waste.
On-Site Energy, Lower Costs
By treating food waste where it’s generated, on-site AD can help food banks reduce waste disposal costs, cut utility bills, and generate clean energy on the spot. One of our partner food pantries, for example, uses the biofertilizer to maintain an extensive rooftop garden, growing fresh produce right where it’s needed.
Education, Engagement, Empowerment
Beyond the environmental and financial benefits, AD offers something more: a powerful tool for community education. On-site systems allow staff, volunteers, and visitors to see sustainability in action—sparking conversations, engagement, and innovation around food waste and climate action.
Join the Movement
We’re proud to support Food Lifeline’s mission and grateful to work alongside such a committed and visionary team. If you're a food bank, nonprofit, or organization looking to rethink your food waste strategy, we’d love to talk.
Let’s turn waste into opportunity—together.
